Trout fishing is good as the fish are settling down and getting used to the steady flow of sockeye rolling up the river and filling some of the eddies and back waters. Big Dogs crew had an epic day in the Canyon yesterday with over 30 fish over 20″ and up to 29″ Today we fished sockeye and filled up the coolers with a limit of yummy fillets.
Matt Hays, owner of the Alaska Ivory Exchange on 4th Avenue in Anchorage joined me for the annual birthday trip. Thanks to his wife Andi for setting things up as usual.
Buddies Andy…
Jeff…
and Keith: Sorry Keith, but I don’t have any pictures from your fish yet, so here is an old one of Matt from last fall with you over his arm.
Sockeye hit the river big time last Tuesday and have been rolling up ever since. I fished with Brad Davis and crew from Anchorage on Friday. The middle river below Skilak is still clear and we watched as a steady line of sockeye paraded upstream. That is, until the frenzy began and the catching was faster then I could net them.
From this point on, we should have good trout fishing, good salmon fishing or both as we move into August.
